The 2 most common marketing mistakes that over 90% of businesses make

If you’ve done any advertising or marketing for your business, there’s a high chance you’ve been making at least 1 of the following 2 marketing mistakes.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in business for 5, 10, 20, 30 years or more, and have been getting what most people would consider pretty good results – we’re here to tell you that these 2 mistakes have lost you sales.

Now we’re not saying this just to get your attention.

In fact, the best thing to do is to get some of your marketing material out in front of you — be it a brochure, a radio script, a newspaper ad, your website or any marketing piece that potential customers or clients see — then evaluate it for yourself as we describe these 2 mistakes.

So let’s begin.

Mistake #1 – The use of cliches

So what are cliches? Here’s the definition of cliches as it pertains to marketing.

“They are words or phrases that are boring, obvious, or predictable. They lack power to create interest because they are overused and unoriginal, but are nevertheless used as though they were unique or distinctive.”

So here’s some examples of the type of cliches we’re referring to…

“Highest Quality, Best Service, Number One, Free Quote, Best Price, Largest Selection, 30 Years of Experience, Been in Business since 1945, Honest, Hard Working, State-of-the-Art”

Now here’s the all important question… Do you have any words or phrases like this in your marketing?

If so, then you’re wasting valuable marketing space which you could be using to say something far more important and something that would actually help towards making the sale.

By using cliches you don’t distinguish or separate yourself in the marketplace as all these sayings are nothing your prospects haven’t heard or read before so they end up believing your company is just the same as everyone else in your industry.

And it doesn’t matter how great your product or service is or how much better you actually are than your competitors, if you use cliches to describe what you do, you leave your prospects with no other choice but to compare you on price.

So analyse your marketing pieces, recognise cliches for what they are and remove them.

Mistake #2 – Fragmented or Mixed Messaging

This is absolutely the wrong approach to marketing, yet it is the most common approach in business today.

Mixed messaging is when you’re running multiple advertising mediums that have all been created by different people.

For example, you have a web designer developing your website and creating the content for it, you have a magazine company designing and writing the copy for your advertisement, a video production company writing your script for your TV commercial.

Now, all of these companies have different ideas about what your marketing message should be, based on their limited experience and knowledge about your business and industry.

So they all end up using cliches and then throwing in their own dose of creativity.

The problem with this is it now takes – on average – 7 points of contact for a prospect to buy so if every message and point of contact your prospect has with you doesn’t say the right thing and doesn’t follow the same congruent message, it makes it extremely difficult to demonstrate why a prospect should buy from you and not from one of your competitors.

This is why your marketing needs to take on a unified approach. Each and every message your prospect sees, reads or hears, needs to convey a message that helps them make a more informed buying decision.

The better you are at doing this, the better chance you have of getting your prospect to buy from you and not your competitor.
